Term 1 - Week 10

Dear Parents and Carers

As we end Term 1, I would like to thank you for your support during this term. Tomorrow is our final day of Term 1. The students are able to wear free dress to celebrate the end of the Term.

Swimming Carnival

The weather for the Carnival today was wonderful. It was great to see the students compete for their houses and cheer each other on. Thank you to all the parent support.

Free-Dress Day

Tomorrow is Free Dress Day. Please make sure your child is in appropriate clothes and shoes for the day. Bring in a gold coin donation to support flood affected families in our communities.

Western Carpark – Lolly Sale

On Friday afternoon there will be a Lolly Sale after school in the Western Carpark.

Thinkuknow Presentation

Our children today are never truly ‘off’. In previous generations, once we left school at 3pm, we were relatively inaccessible to our peers until 8am the next morning. In 2022, children often have multiple accounts on apps such as kids messenger, tik tok, snapchat, fortnite, Minecraft, etc. This means that their school experiences follow them home, and vice versa.

Once we place a device in our child’s hands, many have unrestricted access to the adult world. We also know from the neuroscience, that our children’s brains are not mature enough to deal with many of the challenges devices pose. Our children are still developing their prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for their executive functioning, including their ability to make decisions. Therefore, it is important that the adults in their lives help them establish strong boundaries to keep them safe.

Technology develops at such a rapid pace, and it is difficult for parents to keep up. Therefore, we have invited one of our local police officers to speak at the College. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology. The session will cover:

  • What young people SEE, SAY and DO online
  • The challenges they may face
  • How to report and get help if things go wrong

Please join us on the 21st of April at 6pm, in the Calvary Community Centre at Carbrook.

Our prayer is that you have a wonderful Easter Break.

Yours sincerely,

Fiona Burnett
