Term 2 - Week 1

Dear Parents,

We have had a wonderful first week back. I had the opportunity to attend the opening of the Cunningham Pavilion at Carbrook campus. It is exciting to see the refurbishments and updates happening at Calvary. You may have already noticed the new fencing along Dennis Rd at Springwood which was installed over the Easter break.

Year 4 Camp

Our Year 4 students departed for their Camp this morning. They were very excited about their first school camp experience. Thunderbird Park at Mount Tamborine is a camp designed to develop in students skills of team building, collaboration and resilience. One of the favourites is the Mud Challenge, but they also enjoy fossicking for thunderbird eggs and Indigenous activities and games.

Cyber Safety

The internet is without a doubt a great resource to us. It is a tool that we all use in our daily lives and has many benefits. Appropriate use of the internet is something we need to teach our children. At times it can be hard for them to navigate, and this is why it is vital that our students are educated about Cyber Safety.

Tonight, we have a presentation for all our parents in the Carbrook Community Centre at 6pm. This evening’s focus is on the importance of educating and monitoring our children as they navigate social media and internet use. We are finding more and more that we need to educate ourselves as parents and educators as we guide our students to make wise choices online. We encourage you to join us. This will also be on Zoom and recorded if you can’t make it tonight.

Student Information Session:

Following the parent session, on Thursday 5th of May the Police will come and talk to the students about age-appropriate safety online. I am sure the students will find the information very helpful as they navigate their online worlds. It is important that these sessions are not just one-off conversations. Safety online needs to be an ongoing and constant conversation between parents/carers and their children. We will partner with you and ensure ongoing discussions and educational information is also offered at school.

ANZAC Day March – Monday 25 April

Calvary Students from all year levels are invited to represent Calvary Christian College at our local Anzac Day service. This invitation extends to all Calvary students from Prep to Year 12.

Students will meet staff at 7.15am on Monday 25 April 2022 at Logan East Community Neighbourhood Centre (corner of Cinderella Drive and Vanessa Boulevard, Springwood).

The march is scheduled to begin around 7.45am, starting from the Community Centre along Cinderella Drive to the Memorial service, commencing at approximately 8.15am at the ANZAC Memorial, in Springwood Park Cinderella Drive.

Staff members will meet students at the Community Centre and march with them.  Students are to wear their formal school uniform and hat. They may wear any medals that your family own to show their family involvement in protecting and serving our nation. Our Junior School Captains will lay a wreath. Parents may collect their child at the end of the service from the Memorial site in Springwood Park, which we estimate may end around 9.00am.

Anzac Day School Service

Tomorrow we will host our annual ANZAC Day Memorial Service on the slope facing the ANZAC stone and flag poles. All students from Pre-Prep to Year 6 will attend. We invite all those from the Calvary Community who wish to join us from 9:00am to honour our veterans and their service to our country.

Mother’s Day/Movie & Pizza Night

We are excited to announce our Mother’s Day movie and pizza night will be going ahead on Friday 6 May 2022. Please save the date. We love having our parents back onsite. And we look forward to spoiling our Mums!

Our well-loved Learning Assistant, Bettie Joubert, is leaving us tomorrow to follow an exciting opportunity God has brought her way. Bettie has served in multiple stages, Happy Hens, Bus Sibs and sporting events over the years. We will miss her and wish her the very best.

Next week, Year 6 students from both campuses are heading to Canberra for their annual camp. Please join us in prayer for the safety and wellbeing of all students and staff attending camps this week and next week.

Yours faithfully

Kim
