Springwood Junior School Communications, 28 April 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

ANZAC Day

At the beginning of this week we took part in the Springwood ANZAC commemorations, where a group of our students marched with our School Captains and took part in the Service. The speaker at the event spoke to the youth of today about the values of an ANZAC and how these values can be part of our lives as we grow and look to make a positive impact on the world.

Values such as; Mateship, Courage, Selflessness, Perseverance, Resourcefulness and a Sense of Humour. He spoke of how important it is to grow into young men and woman of integrity, thinking of others before ourselves. This is something we instil in our students through our responsible behaviour plan and our college learning habits.

On Friday we held our own ANZAC service with all the students, including our Pre-Preps, remembering those who have gone before us to fight for the freedoms we have today.  We were honoured to have special guests, Mr Gowers and Mr McDougall join us from the Springwood tri Services RSL. Our students made wreaths to place at our ANZAC Memorial and Dr Gary Holley played the Last Post.  This is always a special time in our community.

Canberra Camp

Our Year 6 students and staff are currently down in Canberra on their last night. The students have had a wonderful time in the cooler weather, learning about Canberra and Australia’s democratic society. This is a great way to learn about how our Government system works first hand. One of the highlights yesterday was visiting the Governor’s House. The students are due back tomorrow night and will have many stories to share with their families. Thank you to the staff who attended the trip and looked after the students.

Logan District Cross Country

Fifteen students, from Years 4&5, attended today’s Logan District Cross Country in Burbank.  Despite the wet weather conditions our students were excellent representatives.  Runners who placed in the top 10 may have qualified for the Logan District Team heading to the Met East Regionals.  These include:

  • Charlotte Snelling 11yo Girls Age Champion
  • Jamie Barke 10yo Boys 2nd Place
  • Reilly McInnes 11yo Boys 2nd Place
  • Eliana Richards 10yo Girls 10th Place

Congratulations to all of our participants!

Cyber Safety

Last week we had the Police come and share with Parents on the Cabrook Campus and Via Zoom a ThinkUKnow presentation.

As we all know the internet is without a doubt a great resource to us. It is a tool that we all use in our daily lives and has many benefits. Appropriate use of the internet is something we need to teach our children. At times it can be hard for them to navigate and this is why it is vitally important that our students are educated about Cyber Safety. Our children are online, they live in an online world. They communicate via – Messenger Kids, Roblox, Fortnite and other apps.

On the Thursday 5 May each of our Stages will have a session from the Police regarding Cyber Safety. We know that this can’t be a one-off talk, it needs to be an ongoing conversation. We ask you to partner with us on this journey. I encourage you all to monitor who your children are speaking to and what they are saying to ensure they are making safe, wise and kind choices online.  We will continue to have on-going age-appropriate conversations with the students at school to help them navigate their online use.
