Term 1 - Week 10

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been an eventful week for staff and students. Below are some updates from the Junior School.

Missions/Fundraising

Our Missions Club was very successful last week in selling icy poles to raise money for our Compassion children, they raised over $260 which is fantastic! This week we had two of our Stage 3 students initiate a pancake fundraiser for flood victims which made over $300. What a wonderful spirit of service we have in our community!

Swimming Carnival

The weather and new venue for the Swimming Carnival today was wonderful. It was fantastic to be all together for a school event once again! It was great to see the students compete for their houses and cheer each other on. Thank you to all the parents that came long to support the students and staff who put on a great event.

Free-Dress Day

Tomorrow is Crazy Sock & Crazy Hair - Free Dress Day. Please make sure your child is in appropriate clothes and shoes for the day. Students are asked to bring in a donation to support flood affected families in our communities.  (No coloured hairspray please)

Project21 Invitation

We are excited to invite our community to celebrate the new Cunningham Pavilion at our official opening ceremony at 9am, Tuesday 19 April 2022.

ANZAC Day March

Calvary students from all year levels are invited to represent Calvary at our local ANZAC day service. Please let the office know if you will be attending and all students are to wear full dress uniform and hat. We are assembling at the Logan Easy Community Neighbourhood Centre (corner of Cinderella Dr and Vanessa Bvld, Springwood) at 7:15 am for a 7:45am march. It really is a beautiful service and we encourage all who can, to attend.

Thank you for an amazing term. We have been so impressed by the way our students have risen to yet more COVID related challenges with the delayed start and disruptions. On behalf of all staff here, we wish all our families a safe and restful Easter break.

Yours faithfully

Kim

Our children today are never truly ‘off’. In previous generations, once we left school at 3pm, we were relatively inaccessible to our peers until 8am the next morning. In 2022, children often have multiple accounts on apps such as kids messenger, tik tok, snapchat, fortnite, Minecraft, etc. This means that their school experiences follow them home, and vice versa.

Once we place a device in our child’s hands, many have unrestricted access to the adult world. We also know from the neuroscience, that our children’s brains are not mature enough to deal with many of the challenges devices pose. Our children are still developing their prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for their executive functioning, including their ability to make decisions. Therefore, it is important that the adults in their lives help them establish strong boundaries to keep them safe.

Technology develops at such a rapid pace, and it is difficult for parents to keep up. Therefore, we have invited one of our local police officers to speak at the College. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology. The session will cover:

  • What young people SEE, SAY and DO online
  • The challenges they may face
  • How to report and get help if things go wrong

Please join us on the 21st of April at 6pm, in the Calvary Community Centre at Carbrook.

CAPA Update - Dr Gary Holley, Head of Calvary Academy of
Performing Arts

The term is ending, and I wish to thank the students, parents and staff for their commitment to the CAPA program during what has been a disjointed term. I am looking forward to Term 2 and the many opportunities it will provide. Remember to keep practicing your instruments over the holidays so you don’t forget the good work done this term.

We have our Cunningham Opening at Carbrook on the first day of Term 2, 19th of April at 9am. Choir has the opportunity to perform at this opening, but parents will need to bring them across. Further details outlining the requirements will be emailed and put on the CAPA Facebook page.

Is your child interested in learning a musical instrument or singing? We have lesson times available at both campuses. Private Lessons are $38 per half hour and Group Lessons of 2 people are $19 per half hour (Subject to numbers) Use the following link if you would like to sign your child up for lessons.
