Term 1, Week 3

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been wonderful to have our students back onsite with us this week.

At our digital assembly on Monday, I presented students with our MSS theme for the year:

I’m from Calvary,

I know I can learn,

therefore,

I can change my world.

We want our students to know that they have the agency and ability to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others around them. This starts with demonstrating confidence in our ability and competence to know what change is needed, how to upskill to make the change, and how to organise and manage the process of the change. A student will not make progress in a subject like English or Mathematics if they don’t feel they can learn.

While the statement ‘I know I can learn’ may seem obvious and simple, embracing the belief we can learn is often difficult and requires us to tap into our reliance, our resourcefulness, and our ability to reflect while considering our investment and motivation to improve.

As educators we are committed to the belief that all our students can improve. School is about improvement. If you don’t need to improve, you don’t need to be at school! If students are struggling to improve, there is often a gap in learning that needs to be addressed. We want to meet every student at their stretch point and provide them with challenging learning experiences – the learning should be a little bit difficult, but it shouldn’t be too easy or too hard.

To fully embrace the idea that ‘I know I can learn’ requires us to consider how we use language. If I get a poor result in class and the way I start to describe it is ‘I did poorly because the teacher didn’t like me/or the assignment didn’t make sense…etc’, I am not providing myself with the power, agency, or opportunity to influence this circumstance. Changing my language to ‘I did poorly because I…’ puts me back in the driver’s seat and allows me to make a change that will benefit my situation. For example:

‘I did poorly because I didn’t invest enough time in studying’ – allows me to pursue an action that can change this circumstance in the future (i.e. I can spend more time studying).

‘I did poorly because I didn’t really understand some of the concepts in the examination’ - gives me the opportunity to change this by seeking out help to understand the concepts in more depth.

As we partner together to raise men and women of influence, who will change their world for the better, I would ask you to support us by speaking into the lives of your children with the concrete conviction that you too ‘know they can learn’ and support them to make changes to their language choices that put them back in control of their situation.

How amazing will it be if our students truly embrace the idea that

I’m from Calvary,

I know I can learn,

therefore,

I can change my world.
