Middle Senior School Communications, 17 Feb 2022

Term 1, Week 4

Dear Parents and Carers,

We had our co-curricular sign up in the Middle and Senior School this week. At Calvary we have a wide variety of activities that students can enjoy, from sporting groups to music groups, to general co-curricular activities. Some of our general co-curricular activities include:

-          Worship and creative teams for chapel

-          Chess clubs, book clubs, art clubs, and baking clubs

-          Calvary News teams

-          Debating and Public Speaking clubs

-          Show Team and fishing club

-          Duke of Edinburgh

Alongside this, as part of our Wednesday afternoon inquiry time, students have the opportunity to engage with other exciting opportunities like the Digital Technology/coding project, the CAPA project (building toward the MSS musical), the Service projects, the Design project, and self-directed STEM or Liberal Arts projects.

Before school on a Friday morning, from 7:15-8:10 we also have our Breakfast Club run by our chaplaincy team where students can come along, socialise and have breakfast (no cost).

Mask Reminder

All students in the MSS are required to bring a mask to school, as per the health directive from the QLD Government. We are able to provide a spare mask for students who have lost or broken their masks, however we are handing out a very high number of extra masks each day. Can you please check with your child that they have an adequate supply of masks to take to school. Please see this, for the time being, as an extension of the uniform policy.

COVID Notice

The College has been notified of positive test results for COVID-19 within our school community this week.

Our school has been taking all appropriate precautions regarding health and hygiene and we will continue to act in accordance with the advice of Queensland Health.

Please continue to:

  • Monitor yourself and your family for COVID-19 symptoms that can include fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, headache, fatigue, diarrhoea, vomiting or nausea, loss of smell and/or taste.

  • Keep your child at home if feeling unwell. If your child has developed any COVID -19 symptoms, you should attend your local Queensland Health testing clinics where students are prioritised to get a free rapid antigen test (RAT).

  • Continue to follow all Queensland Health advice.

If students become symptomatic while at school, you will be contacted to collect them. You will also be provided with a rapid antigen test (RAT) to administer at home.

If your child tests positive to COVID-19, please follow Queensland Health guidelines for reporting the test result, isolation and quarantine.  More COVID-19 related information is available from www.health.qld.gov.au

Volunteer Hours

To simplify the collection of volunteer hours, the College has developed an electronic form for parents to log their hours.  The form can be accessed via the below link and will be accessible on the new app under Parent Links from 21 February 2022.

https://calvaryqld.csassurance.com/contracts/new?contract_template=29&token=uwcgH7GsxzoBpTwZDqh7

This form will replace the hard copy forms previously held in reception.  All hours will need to be submitted electronically to be tallied at the end of the year. Any families who volunteer 24 or more hours will be credited their P&F Levy for 2022.

You will receive a copy of each submission via email, which can be used to keep a tally of your total hours volunteered.  Should you require confirmation of your total hours, please contact HR@calvarycc.qld.edu.au

Please see below for some important updates from Mr Dino Arraiol our Head of Wellbeing and Community:

College Photo Day 2022

The upcoming Calvary photo day is fast approaching on the 23rd of February. Students will be required to be dressed in their full formal uniforms including ties for our boys for Years 7 - 10, and blazers and ties for our Years 11 and 12 students.

Parents should have already received their order forms this week. Orders need to be completed online using the "shootkey" on the order envelopes before the 23rd of February to avoid late fees.

Parents wanting to order sibling photos need to collect an order form for these from reception and complete their order before the 23rd of February.

The schedule for the photo day can be found below:

Uniform Expectations:

As a College we want our students to take pride in their appearance and have communicated with students about the following areas of concern with regards to our dress code:

-          Untidy hair (particularly boys)

-          Boys needing to shave (in particular Years 9 and higher)

We will be asking students that have received a warning for facial hair or untidy hair to rectify these by Wednesday the 23rd of February. If students have not rectified these and there is no communication from parents regarding legitimate reasons why students cannot comply with our expectations, these students will be asked to remain at home until they can meet our College dress code expectations.

We value your support in partnering with us to ensure that our students represent their College with pride and respect.

Establishing clear boundaries

Empowering our students to have agency and stand up for themselves is one of our key focus areas in the wellbeing space this semester. We believe that empowering students to say ‘no’ to things they are uncomfortable with is an essential life-skill and we will continue to work with students to help them set clear boundaries for themselves and others.

Should students experience behaviour from other students they are uncomfortable with or that is inappropriate, they need to know they can report these issues through one of the following three methods:

1.       Face-to-face reporting to any staff member that may be present.

2.       Email their relevant Head of Year or Mr. Arraiol.

3.       Use Stymie (our anonymous reporting system) to submit a report about the incident.

Many teenagers worry that raising a concern will lead to negative repercussions with their peers. We follow up all concerns with a high degree of confidentiality and handle all behavioural issues with a focus to hold students accountable for any poor behaviour, as well as using issues as an opportunity to instruct and mentor students on positive behaviour choices.

In a future Middle and Senior School Assembly, we will remind students how to access Stymie and how to write a report that allows our staff to investigate matters as quickly and efficiently as possible. If your child raises a concern about poor peer behaviour with you at home, please let us know.
