Carbrook campus closure extended

Dear Parents and Carers

As you are aware, Queensland has been experiencing significant flooding and record rainfall which has been cutting access roads and affecting key infrastructure. A Queensland directive from the Premier and Education Minister closed South East Queensland schools, including those in Logan,  on Monday due to hazardous weather conditions. We are still in the middle of this weather event and know many of our staff and families have been affected by the flooding. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Having reviewed the conditions of both our school sites:

Our Springwood Campus will open as normal from Tuesday as it has been relatively unaffected by flooding and access to this site appears to be reasonable. Safety is our key priority, so if Springwood parents have concerns about access to the school from their home location, please contact the school tomorrow to note the child will be remaining at home. Absentees during an extreme weather event are not counted on a student’s report card or on the school’s absentee data.

Our Carbrook Campus, which backs onto the Logan river, will be closed on Tuesday as about one third of the campus is currently affected by flood waters (see picture below). The Logan River is expected to peak on Tuesday morning above the 2017 flood level and there are still current flood warnings for Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road and other local roads. Already the water levels have reached higher than the 2017 level.

Our Carbrook Campus will have a pupil free day on Tuesday, rather than moving to remote learning.  While our intention is to return students to normal learning as soon as possible, we are aware of a significant number in our community who are currently cut off by flood waters, lack electricity or a stable internet connection. We do not want to disadvantage any student or make a difficult situation more stressful for people. Some of our MSS students have examinations at the moment.  Please know that our Academic Coordinator, Mr Handley, is organising alternative dates for these examinations and we can postpone and move assessment dates according to need.

We pray that everyone remains safe during this time.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Cherylynne Gostelow

Principal & CEO
